A Century of 3M Innovation 3M’s long history in automotive care started with their first product – sandpaper. 3M was founded in 1902 as Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing by five men who tried to mine a mineral deposit for grinding-wheel abrasives. That initial venture failed and, by 1910, 3M was in the sandpaper business. It didn’t take long for 3M to make a name for itself.
3M has since ventured into pharmeceuticals, household cleaning, radiology, energy – you name it – but they have never strayed from the product that started it all. 3M now produces over 1000 automotive products, including sandpaper. 3M is an international company comprised of six business segments: consumer and office business, display and graphics, communications, health care, industrial and transportation, and security. With sales of over $25 billion worldwide, 3M leads the market in innovative solutions for business and life. 3M holds 561 patents and has 7,000 researchers working on new ways to make life easier and better for people around the world. Some of 3M’s key areas of innovation directly relate to the automotive industry: abrasives, nanotechnology, and adhesives. Their automotive aftermarket and OEM divisions supply professionals and hobbyists with car polishes, compounds, waxes, adhesives, protectants, and cleaners. Because 3M develops products for every step of the car building process – from cabin air filtration products to underbody coatings – you could say they know cars inside and out. Maybe that’s why so many professional refinishers and do-it-yourselfers depend on 3M car care products. |
